Invisalign Treatment: What to Expect
At your Invisalign consultation, Dr. Desai will examine your teeth, gums, and jaw. Digital X-rays will be taken. If Dr. Desai confirms that you are a viable candidate for Invisalign treatment, a state-of-the-art digital scanner called the iTero scanner will be used to create a complete 3-D rendering of your teeth. This painless scan uses a handheld wand that will be swabbed throughout your mouth.
The 3-D image of your teeth will appear on a screen, and Dr. Desai will explain how your treatment with Invisalign will work. Then, you’ll see an image of what you can expect your smile to look like after you’ve completed your treatment. Dr. Desai will also use the scan to customize the treatment plan and send it to the lab to have your alignment trays created.
If you only need to align a few teeth, you may only receive about a dozen alignment trays. You’ll wear each tray for several weeks, before graduating to the next series of trays. If you must correct most of your teeth, you may have between 20-30 trays.
Depending upon alignment or bite problems that Dr. Desai will need to correct with Invisalign, you may also need to have Invisalign attachments placed on some or most of your teeth. Attachments, also known as Invisalign buttons, are tooth-colored auxiliaries that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They help the aligners work more efficiently and expedite treatment time. They also assure that your aligners fit snugly during wear.
While you’re receiving Invisalign treatment, you’ll see Dr. Desai regularly for progress updates. After you’ve completed treatment, you’ll need to wear a retainer most hours of the day. Overtime, you may only need to wear it only at night.
